The sky and forests around the villages of Brebu Nou and Gărâna are crossed, in every season, by the flight of birds. Some stay through the winter, others return in spring, and their presence brings the landscape to life and gives rhythm to the days.
The white stork is perhaps the best-loved bird of the place. Every spring it returns to its nests on poles and rooftops, and its departure south in autumn is an old sign of the changing season.
The meadows and forest edges are home to many smaller and more colourful birds. The hoopoe, with its distinctive crest, the pheasant at the edge of the fields, the swallow nesting beneath the eaves of houses and barns, and the songbirds of summer fill the air with sound and colour. In Brebu Nou and Gărâna, swallows still build their nests in homes and outbuildings, and local people continue to welcome them, just as generations before them have done.
Winter has its birds too. On the snow and among the bare crowns appear species that endure the cold in search of food. Patience and quiet are the best tools of anyone who wants to watch them.
